The short version
One van, many engines
The Volkswagen Transporter T6 arrived in 2015 and, on the diesel side, every version uses the same basic engine: a 2.0 litre TDI common-rail turbodiesel. That sounds simple, but Volkswagen sold it in a wide spread of power outputs, from an 84 PS workhorse up to a 204 PS twin-turbo, and updated the range again when the facelifted T6.1 arrived. Each of those versions carries its own engine code, and that code is what actually identifies the engine in your van.
This matters most on the day your engine fails. A T6 panel van and the Caravelle parked next to it might look mechanically identical on paper, same model year, same 2.0 TDI badge, yet carry different engines with different codes. Fit the wrong unit and you inherit mismatched ancillaries, sensors and ECU calibration. Order by code and the right engine follows every time.
VW Transporter T6 engine codes at a glance
Here are the T6 and T6.1 diesel engine codes we stock as reconditioned units, with the outputs and years they cover:
| Engine code | Output | Years | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| CXGA | 84 PS | 2015 onwards | Entry-level single turbo |
| CXGB | 102 PS | 2015 onwards | Single turbo |
| CXHB | 114 PS | 2015 to 2019 | Single turbo, also fitted to the Caravelle |
| CXHA | 150 PS | 2017 onwards | Single turbo |
| CXFA | 150 PS | 2015 to 2020 | Also fitted to the California and Multivan |
| CXEB | 204 PS | 2015 to 2019 | BiTDI twin turbo, also fitted to the Caravelle |
| CXEC | 199 PS | 2019 to 2020 | BiTDI twin turbo, T6 and T6.1 |
| CXHC | 110 PS | 2019 to 2020 | T6.1, also fitted to the Caravelle |
The single-turbo TDI codes
Most working Transporters run one of the single-turbo versions. CXGA is the 84 PS entry-level unit, common in fleet and trade vans where outright pace matters less than load lugging. CXGB lifts that to 102 PS and was a popular middle option for panel vans and kombis. CXHB, at 114 PS, appears in Transporters and Caravelles built between 2015 and 2019.
At the top of the single-turbo range sit two 150 PS versions that are easy to confuse. CXHA covers vans from 2017 onwards, while CXFA spans 2015 to 2020 and also appears in the California camper and the Multivan. Both produce the same output, but they are distinct engines with their own codes, which is exactly why we confirm the code before an order is placed rather than working from the power figure alone.
The BiTDI twins: CXEB and CXEC
The twin-turbo BiTDI versions are the performers of the range. CXEB produces 204 PS and was fitted to Transporters and Caravelles from 2015 to 2019. Its successor, CXEC, produces 199 PS and appears in late T6 and early T6.1 vehicles from 2019 to 2020. These engines work harder than their single-turbo siblings and are often found in heavily specced Caravelles and rapid-response vans, so when one fails the owner usually wants it back on the road quickly. We keep reconditioned units for both codes.
The T6.1 update: CXHC
When the facelifted T6.1 arrived, the engine range was revised again. Among the codes we stock, CXHC is the 110 PS unit fitted to T6.1 Transporters and Caravelles from 2019 to 2020. If your van is a T6.1, do not assume it shares a code with an earlier T6 of similar output. The 110 PS CXHC and the older 114 PS CXHB are different engines, and the suffix letter is the tell.

Check your registrationHow to find your T6 engine code
There are four reliable ways to confirm which engine your Transporter carries:
- V5C logbook. The engine number recorded in section 4 usually matches or contains the engine code.
- Stamped on the block. The code is stamped or cast on the engine itself, typically on a machined surface near the gearbox end.
- VIN. Your 17-character Vehicle Identification Number ties the record to your exact van and can confirm the engine fitted from the factory.
- Registration check. The quickest route: enter your reg on our homepage and send it to our team, and we will confirm the correct engine for you.
For the full walkthrough, including where the code hides on the block, read our guide on how to find your engine code.
Still running a T5?
Plenty of T5 Transporters are still earning their keep, and we stock reconditioned engines for those too. The best known is CFCA, the 180 PS BiTDI twin turbo fitted from 2009 to 2015, and we also carry CAAB, the 2.0 unit from the same era that Volkswagen shared between the T5 BlueMotion and the Crafter. If your van predates the T6, the same rule applies: confirm the code first, then order.
Ordering the right reconditioned T6 engine
Every code in the table above is available from us as a fully reconditioned engine: stripped, inspected, rebuilt with worn parts replaced and tested before dispatch. Units are supplied on an exchange basis, meaning your old engine comes back to us, and every engine carries a 6-month warranty as standard. You can read exactly what a rebuild involves on our reconditioning page, and browse current stock and prices in our Volkswagen engine collection.
If your exact code is not listed, that does not mean we cannot help. Stock moves quickly and we can often source engines to order, so get in touch with your reg and code, call us on 0800 208 8928, or message us on WhatsApp.
Frequently asked questions
What engine is in a VW Transporter T6?
Every diesel T6 uses a 2.0 litre TDI, but in different states of tune. Outputs range from 84 PS (CXGA) up to the 204 PS twin-turbo BiTDI (CXEB), and each output has its own engine code.
How do I find out which T6 engine code I have?
Check section 4 of your V5C logbook, look for the code stamped on the engine block, or use your VIN. Quicker still, enter your reg on our homepage and send it to our team and we will confirm the code for you.
Is the T6 BiTDI a different engine from the standard TDI?
Yes. The BiTDI is the twin-turbo version of the 2.0 TDI, sold as CXEB (204 PS, 2015 to 2019) and CXEC (199 PS, 2019 to 2020). It is not interchangeable with the single-turbo units, so the code matters.
Do you stock reconditioned T6 engines?
Yes. We stock reconditioned engines for CXGA, CXGB, CXHA, CXHB, CXHC, CXFA, CXEB and CXEC, supplied on an exchange basis with a 6-month warranty. Browse the Volkswagen collection for current stock.
My Transporter is a T5. Can you still help?
Yes. We stock reconditioned T5 engines including the CFCA BiTDI (180 PS) and CAAB units from 2009 to 2015. Send us your reg and we will confirm the right engine.
